Some archaeological evidence points to early dental bridges secured to existing teeth with gold wire. Traditional Chinese medicine framed dental pain as a disruption in the body’s vital energy pathways, with different teeth corresponding to different organs.
Acupuncturists targeted the hegu point between the thumb and index finger, a technique modern studies suggest reduces pain perception through endorphin release. Chinese healers also packed arsenic paste into severely decayed teeth to kill the nerve, a procedure that conceptually resembles modern root canal therapy. Garlic, which contains the antimicrobial compound allicin, was widely applied to infected teeth and gums. Medieval Europe preserved classical medical knowledge alongside darker practices.
Cloves remained a staple remedy imported from Indonesia, while poorer patients used mustard seeds, pepper, and plantain, an herb containing compounds with verified anti-inflammatory and mild analgesic properties.
