How Did Humans Invent Paper?

The most transformative material in human history is probably within arm’s reach right now. Paper, so ordinary it is rarely noticed, is the quiet engine behind civilization itself: how laws are written, religions spread, and revolutions begin. For thousands of years, every writing surface humans used was too heavy, too expensive, too fragile, or too rare. Paper solved all of those problems at once.

The earliest writing materials were basic. In Mesopotamia around 3,400 BC, people pressed reeds into wet clay, creating the wedge-shaped marks known as cuneiform. Clay tablets were free and fireproof—when the library at Nineveh burned, the fire hardened the tablets and preserved them. But clay was heavy and immobile.

In Egypt, papyrus, made from the cypress plant along the Nile, became the dominant writing surface. The oldest known inscribed papyrus, the diary of Merer dated to roughly 2560 BC, is not a poem or myth. It is a logistics report detailing the transport of limestone for the Great Pyramid. The first written papyrus was a shipping manifest, and bureaucratic use of writing surfaces came before any romantic literary use.

Papyrus was fragile and geographically exclusive, giving Egypt a monopoly. According to the Roman author Pliny the Elder, a papyrus embargo by the Ptolemies in the 2nd century BC drove King Eumenes II of Pergamum to develop parchment from animal skins. The word parchment comes from the Latin *pergamenum*, meaning “of Pergamum. ” Parchment was durable and foldable, allowing for the codex book format.

But its cost was immense: one Bible required the skins of up to 300 animals. Parchment kept literacy expensive and knowledge in the hands of cathedrals and kings. China faced the same problem with different materials. Bamboo strips were heavy—Emperor Qin Shi Huang reportedly read 30 kilograms of documents daily—and silk was beautiful but ruinously expensive.

Neither provided a practical middle ground. Archaeological discoveries have pushed the origins of paper back centuries before the man traditionally credited with its invention. In 1957, paper fragments made from hemp were found near Xi’an and dated to the reign of Emperor Wu, roughly 140 to 87 BC. In 1986, a paper map dated to approximately 179 to 141 BC was found in Gansu province.

Fragments with writing recovered from the Xuanquanzhi relay station date from 111 BC onward. Paper evolved gradually in western China over several centuries, not as a sudden invention. The credit, however, went to Cai Lun, a eunuch in the Eastern Han court who submitted a report to Emperor He in 105 AD. According to the *Book of the Later Han*, Cai Lun refined the process using tree bark, hemp, old rags, and fish nets.

He did not invent paper from nothing, but he turned a crude experimental material into a standardized, scalable product, using waste materials that cost nothing. He also gifted it to the imperial bureaucracy, which adopted it wholesale. Cai Lun’s own story ended in tragedy. Years earlier, he had been involved in a court conspiracy that led to the wrongful death of another consort and her son.

After the political winds shifted, he was ordered to prison in 121 AD. Instead of facing humiliation, he bathed, dressed in his finest robes, and drank poison. He died a political casualty, while the paper he improved survived him. The traditional Chinese process was elegant in its simplicity: soak cellulose-rich fiber in water and lye, beat it for hours, suspend the pulp in a vat, catch a thin layer on a bamboo screen, press, and dry.

Five steps converted garbage into the material that carries sacred texts, constitutions, and every novel you have ever read. The key innovation was the removable screen, which allowed for rapid, repeatable production, something none of its predecessors could match. By the Tang Dynasty, paper dominated China. Its journey outward came through an unlikely event: a battle.

In July 751 AD, the Tang armies under General Gao Xianzhi were defeated near the Talas River by the Abbasid Caliphate, partly due to Turkish defections. Among the prisoners were Chinese papermakers, and they were brought to Samarkand, which soon became a major production center. The technology moved to Baghdad by roughly 793 AD, spreading through Damascus, Egypt, North Africa, and eventually Spain by 1056 to 1150 AD. The Islamic Golden Age ran on paper.

The translation movement in Baghdad, the House of Wisdom, and the works of scholars like al-Khwarizmi, Ibn Sina, and Ibn al-Haytham all depended on a cheap, abundant writing surface. Without paper, that intellectual explosion may not have happened. Europe adopted paper slowly. Emperor Frederick II banned it for official documents in 1221, considering it impermanent.

But cost overpowered prejudice. Italian papermakers in Fabriano introduced watermarks, water-powered stamping mills, and animal gelatin sizing around 1280 AD. German nobleman Ulman Stromer built a major mill in Nuremberg around 1390—just in time for Johannes Gutenberg. Without paper, the printing press could not have become economically viable.

Of the roughly 180 Gutenberg Bibles printed around 1455, about 135 were on paper. By 1500, an estimated 20 million printed volumes circulated across Europe. Paper made the Reformation, the scientific revolution, and the modern world possible. Paper also served purposes beyond writing.

During the Tang and Song dynasties, Chinese armies used layered lacquered paper armor, called *zhijia*, which could resist arrows. In 1048 alone, the government ordered 30,000 suits. Modern testing has confirmed the principle: layers of flexible material disperse impact energy. Independently, across the Pacific, the Maya and Aztecs developed their own paper-like material called *amate*, made from beaten fig bark.

It used no mold or screen, relying entirely on pounding. The Maya wrote their codices on it, and the Aztecs used it for tribute lists and religious offerings. When the Spanish arrived, missionaries burned nearly all of these codices as works of the devil. Only four Maya codices survive today.

Thousands of years of astronomical, mathematical, and historical knowledge were lost to fire—a reminder that the same material that carries knowledge forward can also be destroyed by those who fear or misunderstand it. For centuries, paper was made from rags. By the 18th century, demand exceeded supply, and the industry was strangled for raw material. In 1719, a French scientist named René Antoine Réaumur noticed that wasps made paper-like nests from chewed wood fiber and suggested humans could do the same.

Nobody listened for over a hundred years. In 1843, German weaver Friedrich Gottlob Keller developed a wood-grinding process and patented it in 1845. A Nova Scotian, Charles Fenerty, independently developed a similar process but did not patent it. Wood pulp made paper nearly limitless, enabling mass-circulation newspapers, cheap books, and universal education.

The machinery also advanced. In 1799, Louis Nicolas Robert invented the first continuous paper-making machine, patented on January 18, 1799. Taken to England, it was built by Bryan Donkin for the Fourdrinier brothers, who invested over 60,000 pounds and went bankrupt trying to enforce their patents. The Fourdrinier machine’s basic design remains the foundation of nearly every paper machine on Earth.

The brothers never profited from the invention that bears their name. Paper currency also originated in China. Tang-era merchants used “flying money” certificates, but the first true government-issued banknotes, called *jiaozi*, appeared in Sichuan province around 1024 AD. Kublai Khan made paper currency the primary medium of exchange across his empire.

Marco Polo was astonished, writing that the Great Khan turned bark into money. A near-worthless material became valuable by declaration alone—the most radical use of paper in history. Europe did not catch up until Sweden issued banknotes in 1661. The modern paper industry carries a heavy environmental cost.

It consumes roughly 33 to 40% of the world’s industrially harvested timber and about 400 million tons are produced each year. Producing one ton of office paper requires thousands of liters of water. But paper is also one of the most recycled materials, with global recycling rates between 58 and 68%. Recycling a ton of paper saves about 17 trees and significant water and emissions.

The prediction of a paperless office has repeatedly failed. After Business Week predicted its arrival by the 1990s, global paper use grew by roughly 400% in the following 50 years. Physical books still account for the vast majority of sales. Paper was invented at least twice independently: once in China, evolving from roughly 200 BC to Cai Lun’s refinement, and once in Mesoamerica, with the amate tradition, which had no contact with the Old World.

The globally dominant Chinese process, however, traces a single clear path: China to Samarkand in 751 AD, to Baghdad, to the Islamic world, to Spain, Italy, France, Germany, and the world. If China had not invented it, someone else eventually would have, because the need was universal and the materials abundant. The essence of paper has never changed: fiber, water, screen, press, and dry. From that process, humans built every institution that defines the modern world—laws, treaties, constitutions, property deeds, identity documents.

Cai Lun left no dynasty and no heirs, but he left paper, and it outlasted every emperor who ever held it. The same act that began over 2,000 years ago, pulling a screen out of a vat of fiber and water, continues in every child learning to write today.
